Hans Hesse

The mountain altar

In 1523, the upper-Saxon artist Hans Hesse painted the history of the first discovered silver and the processing of the ore on 4 picture-blackboards of the unique mountain altar.
According to the saga, an angel hovers and announces the miner Daniel Knappe, he will find silvery eggs under a certain tree.
He digs and posts the ore. Cottages originate; it is mined, dug, cleaned, melted, weighted and shaped.
Also the female sex doesn't participate left without work.
Rich silver-findings resulted in the " Berggeschrey ", that means they lured many people into this inhospitable area.

This saga is regarded as foundation-saga for Annaberg.

Today, the mountain altar stands in the St. Annen-church in Annaberg-Buchholz.
