Adam Ries
Annaberg-Buchholz carries the name mountain - and Adam-Ries-city. Some quote: " that will be after Adam Ries...", in order to confirm the correctness of a calculation. However, the fewest bring the name of the important master of calculations in connection with Annaberg-Buchholz although he has lived and worked here over three decades.
The bloom of the silver-mining walked around with a rapid upswing in science and art which has left diverse tracks.
Under the numerous specialists, whom the mining lured after Anna-berg, was Adam Ries, in 1523. Born in Staffelstein (Franconia), he got over Erfurt to Annaberg. To this time, he was already a known master of calculations. During his Erfurter time, he had begun to publish books about calculations. For his work, "Rechnung auff der Linien vnd federn..." 120 editions are proved in the meantime.
In the area about Annaberg, he dressed several offices, among others as counter-writer.
He attained his actual meaning through his work for the general spread of the art of calculation. In the present Adam-Ries-museum, he furnished a school for calculation. He essentially helped "dem gemeynen man" to open up the art of calculation. A bust of the sculptor Robert Henze, that is at the Trinitatis-church, reminds of the work of this known personality.
The original handwriting of the Coß of Adam Ries, a masterpiece of the algebra, is stored in the Ore Mountain museum. The quality of his books about calculations publicized him far over his death (1559) in the whole country.
